Perceptions

The project, Perceptions, is one that I created to explore the spectrum of expression of the young Black people who make up the student body of Morgan State University. I debated between naming the project “Perceptions” or “Expressions,” but ultimately landed on “Perceptions” because social life is centered around dictating how you perceive yourself and how you project said perception out into the world. I use the term Perception quite liberally when describing the social lifestyle of today because of the word’s double application to how one perceives themself and how others perceive them and the relationship between the two.

The relationship, I find, that exists between self-perception and actual perception lies in the way one carries themself, which ultimately is a spin on the “golden rule:” treat others the way you wish to be treated. If one wishes to be perceived a certain way, that is the image they will put out into the world. To explore this concept, I chose a laissez-faire approach to each shoot where I did not tell my models how to dress, I did not pre-select locations, I simply allowed everything to flow the way it naturally was supposed to.

I would like to finish off this project with a thanks to my audience and a sort of circular ending. This “ending” is actually the first piece of the shoot. A few experiences recently (relative to the completion of this project) have introduced to me the concept of circular stories and that nothing ever really ends. So I’d like to drive the former concept home by ending off the project with the beginning of it.
